Day 2 Cleveland, TX- Burkburnett, TX

So the tire trouble on the first drive was just a bad valve stem which was a quick $20 repair (well, $25 if you include the $5 tip for a cold one after work), and after a big home cooked breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, biscuits & gravy, red hash, and caprese bruschetta cooked lovingly by our lovely friend, Jude, we hit the road for Burkburnett, TX for a one night pop up on the way to Palo Duro.

It was a long stretch today, but we set ourselves up for a quick 3 1/2 hour drive to Palo Duro Canyon, TX.  Now I had never heard of Palo Duro before we decided to route though it, but it turns out to be the 2nd largest canyon in America! Who knew?

We found a KOA just off of I-44 and popped up before relaxing with a few ice cold Modelos (Maggie enjoyed some rosé ) and Nathan’s hot dogs. We were are pretty tired and tucked ourselves in around 9:30.

It was around 5:30am when we started to feel the wind pushing the camper around. Not long after was the pitter patter of rain, and then a deluge, and then the quarter sized hail amidst gusts of wind up to 60mph. It wasn’t until we received notifications of 2 lightning strikes within the campground that we made the move to the car. And then it wasn’t until August relieved himself from the door of the car that I realized that I could’ve actually driven him to the bathhouse. Oh well, peeing outside builds character, right?

We are presently still in the car at about 8:35am listening to Bob Dylan’s new record in it’s entirety waiting for the rain to let up and the water to go down so we can pop down and head to our first multi night stop at Palo Duro Canyon. I’ll be grilling up some Father’s Day steaks tonight while drinking a cold one surrounded by people I love.

Happy Father’s Day to all you fathers out there and big hugs and love to all of you who are missing your fathers today.

Here’s to another day of adventure!

In the words of the ever inspiring Spencer Bohren, “Be good to yourselves, and be good to each other.”
